Discerning Voices

On Sunday, March 8th we looked at Satan’s temptation of Jesus in Matthew 4. We are often opposed by Satan in the same way that Jesus was - through the speaking of lies and distortion of truth. We ended our gathering with a practice that helps us discern the different voices that we hear speaking to us. Ultimately, we want to practice this so we can learn the voice of our Father and hear more clearly the words He has for us.

To do this practice:

  • Start with a topic (for example: What is my identity?)

  • Make columns for 3 categories: My Voice, Satan’s Voice, and God’s Voice

  • Contemplate the thoughts you’ve had on this topic over the past week, what competing voices did you hear? Write them out and categorize them into voices.

Helpful tips:

  • Our voice tends to express our own desires, needs, and comforts. It is typically self-focused.

  • Satan’s voice is lying to us, trying to trick, scare, confuse, blame, guilt, or anger us. This voice wants us to doubt and disobey God.

  • God’s voice is always speaking truth. All scripture is truth, so feel free to start there. God speaks love, encouragement, and He is full of compassion.
