Member Commitments
Church membership can look different from church to church. At The Summit, it means making clear commitments to one another as a church family—grounded in Scripture and aimed at helping us grow in love and Christlikeness.
Love God.
As a member of the covenant community at The Summit Church, I commit to love God, because…
Our foundation is the gospel – it is the principle doctrine of the faith that both reconciles us to God and helps us to grow in our relationship with Him. Therefore:
We are committed to the true, biblical Gospel (1 Cor. 15, Jude 3, 2 Tim. 3:16).
We are committed to knowing the gospel with excellence, and living out its implications in everyday life (1 Pet. 3:15, Gal. 2:14).
I affirm the Bible’s inerrancy, its centrality to the church’s mission, and the need to submit to its teaching in all matters of life.
I affirm The Summit’s confessional statement, found at www.summitdenver.org/beliefs.
I affirm my responsibility to grow in Christ and his gospel through the consistent practice of spiritual disciplines.
Love The Summit Community.
As a member of the covenant community at The Summit Church, I commit to love The Summit community, because…
The gospel creates community – we are committed to living life together and challenging one another to grow in Christ. Therefore:
We are committed to being a church consisting of those who are actively following and pursuing Jesus (Rom. 12:5, 1 Pet. 2:4-5, Matt. 18:15-20).
We are committed to a unified church (Phil 2:1-11, Rom. 12:3-8, Heb. 10:24-25).
We are committed to a biblically ordered church (1 Tim. 3:1-13, Heb. 13:17).
I affirm my new birth in Christ, and my responsibility to live consistently with this through obedience to his commands.
I affirm that I will protect The Summit’s unity, and will not undermine the mission with my actions or words. I will preserve the unity of biblical fellowship in matters of non-essential beliefs or preferences.
I affirm that because we are members of one body, we will share life with one another, serve one another, and prioritize gathering together.
I affirm that I will submit to the biblical leadership of the church and support the leaders in prayer.
Love Denver and the World.
As a member of the covenant community at The Summit Church, I commit to love Denver and the world, because…
Our community is missional – we exist not for ourselves but rather for the joy of others, as we strive to be a well-equipped community of missionaries that reaches Denver with the gospel. Therefore:
We are committed to God’s fame instead of our own (1 Cor. 10:31).
We are committed to giving generously to the mission and living sacrificially for its progress (2 Cor. 8:9).
We are committed to every member as a missionary (Matt. 28:16-20, 2 Tim. 2:2).
I affirm that we are God’s church and not our own. My preferences, needs, and desires are secondary to the mission and vision of the church.
I affirm that I will give my time, resources, and money in a sacrificial manner consistent with the gospel.
I affirm my responsibility to evangelize and make disciples who can make disciples. This is as much my responsibility as it is the church’s leaders.
I affirm I will pray regularly for the city of Denver and its people.
The Summit’s Leadership covenants to:
Consist of leaders who are tested and approved according to the Biblical requirements of eldership (1 Tim. 3:1-13; 5:17-22; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Pet. 5:1-4).
Function primarily in three ways for the purpose of honoring Jesus and seeking the growth of The Summit’s members as followers of him: (1) Shepherd Leaders (2) Teachers of God’s Word and (3) Equippers of the congregation for the work of ministry (1 Pet. 5:1-3; 2 Tim. 4:1-2; Eph. 4:11-13).
Be on guard against false teachers (Acts 20:28-31)
Lovingly oversee discipline when necessary, for the glory of God, the good of the one disciplined and the health of the church as a whole (Mt. 18:15-20; 1 Cor. 5; Gal. 6:1; Jas. 5:19-20).
Set an example and join in fulfilling the duties of church membership (1 Cor. 11:1; Phil. 3:17; 1 Tim. 4:12).
Sign the Covenant
